Seeing the good in every single situation has been one of the most important habits I have ever created for myself. This habit quite literally has given me the ability to learn so many great things from SO many situations that I would usually shut out.
Life is full of obstacles, we will always have challenges and these difficulties are the reason we know to cherish the HELL out of the good things when they happen to us. Our hardships make us value the good times. Other wise all of our happy times would just be boring.
How do we break the habit of focusing on the negative and switching that habit to focusing on the positive in bad situations, challenging situations? How do we take a challenging situation and switch them to opportunities to learn? These are three areas that we can control in situations and we can work on strengthening them.
1. Attitude – how you feel or think about something. This is something you have ALL the control over in your life.
If you are a person that responds to someone saying “Today is literally the perfect day” with “Yes, but it’s really hot outside and the sun gives me a headache.” It’s time to change your perspective.
Your attitude is one of the biggest factors on how you handle a situation. When a bad thing happens, you immediately suppress to a depressed state and start to think about all the bad things that happen and when positive things happen to us, you’re likely to take them for granted. We have all been guilty of both of these things, but the best part about it is that it is something we can CHANGE. Focus on the positive and watch your life drastically change.
2. Awareness – being 100% in the moment and aware of what’s happening around you will allow you to perceive a situation for what it truly is, whether it’s a good situation or a bad one. If you are not aware, you will miss all the opportunities that each situation brings in your life that can lead to a learning lesson and growth. If your sense of awareness is high, you can see a situation for what it is and work on improving your attitude and action towards it. Eventually, you’ll be able to see little situations and blessings and start to appreciate them more and more.
3. Action – once you are aware of a situation, you can decide on how you will REACT. If you see a situation as negative, you are going to react negative and vice versa. Don’t add the description of negative or positive to any situation, merely just let it be what it is – a situation. In order to make the most out of every situation, you need to act positively.
Example for my line of work : If I lose a client – how do I react?
Instead of crying over it, I look at the lesson I can learn from it, and start to work on how I can improve so I can become of better service. I strive to improve in every area that I can. This situation leads me to better success in the future, even if it wasn’t an ideal situation.
I am aware of the situation that someone provided a better service to my client. Which then led me to make the decision to improve my service, because my attitude is that this WILL be a good thing for my business. In turn, I acted immediately on bettering my service, which then led me to giving excellent service and gaining more clients in the future. I could have easily shut down, but instead I took the situation for merely what it was – a situation that I could either learn and grow from or break down over.
This is not a habit that will happen over night, but it will lead to a peaceful, successful life and is worth every ounce of practice!
