So I’m going to Raleigh this weekend which means that I have to pack. If you’re anything like me and you probably are, you have this really bad habit of overpacking. Something like “YES, I do need all 20 of these tops because I MAY change 7 times a day!” Since I am flying and baggage fees are through the roof, I decided to be SMART and plan ahead of time. So I’m going to share the tips that I will be taking and cool hacks that I learned!
- PLAN YOUR OUTFITS.
The most important thing I took away from this was to plan your outfits ahead of time. I mean, clearly this would totally avoid the I may need this “just in case” and the throwing different tops and bottoms that don’t even match that you won’t even wear the whole time you’re there problem. Surprisingly enough, I have never done this.
- Pick out what you need and then cut it in half.
This one hurt. HOW COULD YOU MAKE ME DO THAT?! But, it really did make me realize that I’m taking up space on something that I’m not even going to touch while I’m there and it also made me realize that I may not need all 7 Harry Potter books to read…weird.
- Make a list.
Think about it as Santa’s nice and naughty list. If you’re nice, you come on the trip with me and if you’re naughty…well you’re just going to stay home. I made a list and decided to make it a printable for you guys to have a little bit of a head start. Don’t forget to recheck this list, just to make sure that you actually packed everything that you need and then RECHECK IT AGAIN.
Now on to the packing your luggage part.
- Roll your clothes.
This was like the number one recommended thing when I started learning how to properly pack a bag, I’ve never done it, but wow it really does free up so much space and you can roll your clothes with tissue paper which prevents it from wrinkling.
- Use all of the space.
Put your jewelry in your socks and put your socks in your shoes. Turn your hat upside down and fold your bras in there. You can even put your underwear in your bras. If you’re bringing another purse, put items in your purse. If you have breakables, you can wrap them in your socks as well.
- Put your necklaces through straws.
One of my biggest flaws is that I buy expensive necklaces and then I tangle them after wearing them one time and they’re never worn again. Straws help keep your necklaces untangled. HALLELUJAH.
- Put dryer sheets in your bag.
That awkward smell that somehow always ends up in your bag is just a pain. Save yourself some misery and put some dryer sheets in your bag to keep the freshness the entire time!
- Put plastic wrap over your spillable things.
I went on a trip one time and my lotion leaked. All over everything. I have never experienced such devastation. Put a wrap over your spillable things and then on top of that…put your spillable items in a ziploc bag. Just an extra step to prevent the spill that could ruin your whole life. Save yourself.
- Wrap any cords neatly.
As much as I want to just throw my macbook charger into my bag, I spent the extra time actually making it not look like a 2 year old packed and it definitely saved some space.
- Put your shoes in shower caps.
I was able to skip this because my bag has a spot that I can zip my shoes into. So all I did was throw them all into the zipped spot, but if you don’t have that luxury, shower caps will save you from the dirty shoe/clean clothes fiasco.
- Extra bags and trash bags.
I pack an extra ziploc, just in case. I use a trash bag for my dirty clothes, but you could also get a collapsable laundry bag. I rather just use something I already have, so I went for the trash bag.
- Buy the mini version.
If it comes in a mini, buy that instead of the full size. I mean, if you run out, every place has a walgreens or some kind of place that you can buy necessities. Don’t waste space and weight buying full size items when you only will use them a few times!
- Keep your heavier things near the wheels.
Common sense, but I would have never thought about it until after I was finished packing so I thought I would throw it in here just to remind you BEFORE you start packing. It’ll save you some time.
- Last but not least, wear your bulkier items on the plane.
If you’re bringing a huge jacket, wear it. Use it as a blanket it or a pillow on the plane, but keep it out of your suitcase because it just takes up too much room! Oh, and keep an outfit change in your carry on. Apparently losing luggage is far too common with airlines.
Now that you are a packing machine, enjoy your vacation. You’ll absolutely be hearing about my Raleigh trip. My best blogger friends are about to become my actual real life best friends and I can’t wait! As always, thank you for sticking around and reading along. Every like, comment, subscriber, and view is why I get to do what I do!
